HISTORICAL DATA
The German StuH 42 G, officially known as the Sturmhaubitze 42 (StuH 42), was a self-propelled artillery vehicle utilized by Nazi Germany during World War II. Developed in response to the need for mobile artillery support for infantry and armored units, the StuH 42 G was a variant of the Sturmgeschütz III assault gun, which itself was based on the Panzer III chassis.

The primary armament of the StuH 42 G was a 10.5 cm leichte Feldhaubitze 18/1 L/28 howitzer, a powerful weapon capable of delivering devastating high-explosive shells against enemy fortifications, infantry, and armored vehicles. The howitzer had a limited traverse range, requiring the vehicle to be repositioned to aim accurately at different targets. However, its potent firepower and relatively low silhouette made it a formidable asset on the battlefield.

Mounted on the chassis of the Panzer III, the StuH 42 G retained the mobility and durability of its predecessor. It was powered by a Maybach HL 120 TRM V-12 engine, which provided sufficient speed and agility to keep pace with advancing infantry and armored units. The vehicle’s armor protection was adequate for its role, providing protection against small arms fire and shell fragments.

In terms of crew composition, the StuH 42 G typically had a crew of four: a commander, gunner, loader, and driver. The commander doubled as the vehicle’s gunner, overseeing target acquisition and engagement. The loader was responsible for feeding ammunition into the breech of the howitzer, ensuring a steady rate of fire during combat operations.

Throughout its service, the StuH 42 G proved to be a versatile and effective artillery platform, providing crucial fire support to German ground forces on various fronts. Its ability to deliver accurate and powerful fire against enemy positions made it a feared weapon among Allied forces. Although production numbers were limited compared to other German armored vehicles, the StuH 42 G played a significant role in the later stages of World War II, contributing to the German war effort until the end of the conflict.
